DO YOU WASH YOUR FACIAL CLEANSING BRUSH?

         "Welcome to the Make-Up Chronicles"

INT.  BATHROOM - NIGHT

You just finished the latest 10,000 step organic skincare routine.  While practicing your selfie pose in the mirror you notice your skin’s still lookin’ a little… lackluster.

Heck, your grandma’s skin looks more lively at this point and she’s been on your aunty’s mantle since the first season of the Bachelor! On closer examination, you notice residual makeup trapped in your pores!

YOU

Oh, no.  How long has that been there?

FACIAL BRUSH

Psst…Psst… over here.

YOU

Wha?

You noticed your facial brush vibrating in its cradle.

FACIAL BRUSH

Over here Princess!

YOU

Yes.

FACIAL BRUSH

I’m trying real hard to give your face the cleaning it deserves but….

YOU

But what?

FACIAL BRUSH

(whiny) My bristles are all stained from makeup build-up, collecting germs and bacteria because you refuse to give me a  weekly cleaning..

YOU

That bad?

FACIAL BRUSH

Facial soap and water is our friend!  Do remember when my bristles were shiny and clean like your red bottom pumps?

YOU

Well, of course you were brand new?

FACIAL BRUSH

To extend the life of my bristles girl you got to wash me,  Then after  3 months, then you can renew.

YOU

Okay, so I need to clean you…..

FACIAL BRUSH

With soap and water after every use.   And alcohol soak once a week for good measure. Those germs are such clout chasers. They’ll try to spread out an multiply they’ll clog up any pore if you let them..

YOU

I don’t have time for that?

FACIAL BRUSH

Your future face will thank you.  Or I’ll start calling you pothole patrice….

YOU

Alright, Alright, you’re right.

FACIAL BRUSH

Finally got your attention!

THE MAKE-UP CHRONICLES AUDIO SHORT

"Where your makeup speaks volumes"

So, WHAT are facial cleansing brushes?

Here's the Science:

Facial cleansing brushes are hand held brushes that compliment your skincare routine by helping wash and exfoliate your face. Most facial cleansing brushes have a powered rotating brush head that helps to reach deep seated dirt, bacteria and dead skin trapped in pores. As a result, with regular use, you can have softer, brighter and clearer skin!

What are the benefits?

  • A more thorough wash.
    • Your hands and washcloth can only do so much on the surface. Facial brushes achieve a more extensive wash as the bristles draw out deep seated dirt and bacteria hiding in your pores. This also helps keep acne away.
  • They exfoliate!
    • Who’s got time for dead skin? None of us! Facial brushes help sweep away dead skin, revealing a smoother, fresh complexion!
  • Gets that circulation up and running.
    • Facial brushes help stimulate blood flow throughout your skin, producing a healthier and brighter complexion with their powered rotary feature. Get that glow, girl!

Here is something to consider

However, these only occur if you use your facial brush too often:

  • Dryness
  • Inflammation

While there are plenty of benefits to facial cleansing brushes, keeping your face clean is great, it’s not good to overdo it. Our skin still needs a healthy balance of natural oils and good bacteria in between washes in order to stay at its best!

With this in mind, start out by using your facial brush only 1-2 times a week, see how your skin reacts, and then go up from there.

How do you maintain a clean facial brush?

Method #1: Warm water and soap

  1. If possible, unscrew the brush head from your facial cleanser.
  2. Dollop a generous amount of any gentle hand or dish soap on the bristles and start scrubbing away with warm water (you can also use a toothbrush that you don’t need or a rubber exfoliator to use as a scrubber instead of your hands!).
  3. Clean until all residual makeup and dirt is gone and the water runs clear.
  4. Allow your facial brush to air dry separately from the handle overnight.
    • Make sure the bristles are drying at a downwards angle.
    • To speed up the process, blow dry your brush by using the low setting.

Method #2: White vinegar and water

  1. Mix one tablespoon of white vinegar and one pint of water.
  2. Let the head of your facial cleansing brush soak for 10 minutes.
  3. After the 10 minutes, scrub the bristles and rinse.
  4. If a vinegar smell remains, give your brush an extra scrub with some soap and water.

Method #3: Rubbing alcohol (only to be used once a week)

  1. Soak the head of your brush in a bowl of rubbing alcohol for 10 minutes
  2. After the 10 minutes are up, do not rinse. Instead, let your brush air dry. The alcohol will kill any lingering bad bacteria from being used.

Important: After cleaning your facial cleansing brush, always store it in a dry, clean place to avoid bacteria or fungus growing!

When should you replace your facial cleansing brush?

Like any tool, facial brushes accumulate wear and tear. It’s a good idea to replace the head of your brush every 3 months.

Here are your Safe Beauty Takeaways:

  1. Reminder to renew! Replace the head of your brush every 3 months.
  2. Facial cleansing brushes give you a more thorough wash.
  3. To get the blood flowing, use a facial brush.
  4. Facial brushes can cause dryness and inflammation if used too often.
  5. You can clean with good ol’ soap and water.
  6. Soaking the head of your facial brush in white vinegar and water will do a deep dive clean!
  7. For some special treatment, soak the head of your brush in alcohol once a week.
  8. Always store your facial brush in a clean, dry place.
  9. Reminder to renew! Replace the head of your brush every 3 months.

That's it!
